Welcome to Space Lab: Better Ways to Use the Space You Have

Meet Space Lab, where we explore smarter ways to organise, design and rethink the spaces around us — from practical changes today to ideas shaping homes of the future.

What if you don't actually need more space?

It's easy to look around your home and decide the problem is obvious. You need more space. Another cupboard would help. A bigger kitchen would be nice. A spare room would solve the home-office problem. And somehow, no matter how much storage you already have, there always seems to be something without a proper place. Sometimes more space genuinely would make life easier. But sometimes the more interesting question is: Could the space you already have work harder? That's what Space Lab is here to explore. It's the part of Spacelo dedicated to how we use space — from simple organisation and better room layouts to clever products, adaptable furniture and ideas that could change what our homes look like in the future. You don't need a huge renovation project to make a home work better. Sometimes moving something is enough. Sometimes it's finding a better way to store it. And sometimes someone has come up with an idea that makes you wonder why we haven't been doing it that way all along.

Home Organisation: making space work harder

Good organisation isn't necessarily about fitting as much as possible into a cupboard. It's about making the things you actually use easier to store, find and live with. Space Lab will explore practical ways to make better use of kitchens, bedrooms, living rooms and all those awkward corners that don't quite seem to have a purpose. That could mean smarter storage, changing the layout of a room or simply questioning whether something is currently in the best place. Small homes will naturally be part of that conversation, but this isn't only about living with limited square footage. A large room can be badly organised too. The goal is to make the space work better for the person using it.

Home Office: making room for work

Not everyone working from home has a dedicated office. Sometimes the office is a desk in the bedroom. Sometimes it's part of the living room. Sometimes it's the dining table — right up until someone needs the dining table. Space Lab will look at ways to create better places to work, whether you have an entire room available or barely enough space for a desk. We'll explore layouts, storage, lighting, furniture and ways of separating work from the rest of home life. And when there isn't much room available, we'll look at how spaces can perform more than one job without feeling permanently taken over by work. Because a home office doesn't necessarily need its own room. It needs a space that works.

Innovation: the ideas that make us look twice

Some of the most interesting ideas for our homes don't require building anything bigger. They simply use space differently. Furniture can fold away, transform or perform more than one function. Storage can appear in places we'd normally ignore. Everyday objects can be redesigned to take up less room or work considerably better. Space Lab's Innovation section is where we'll explore those ideas. Some will be products you can buy now. Others might be clever designs, emerging concepts or solutions that haven't become commonplace yet. They won't all be things we'd necessarily put in our own homes either. Sometimes an idea is worth exploring simply because it makes you think differently about what's possible. And if we find something that makes us ask “Why isn't this more common?”, there's a good chance it'll end up here.

Future Living: what happens next?

Homes don't stay the same forever. The way we work has already changed how many people use them. Technology is changing what we expect them to do. Housing pressures are encouraging designers to think more carefully about smaller and more adaptable spaces. So what might come next? Future Living is where Space Lab can look a little further ahead. We'll explore emerging approaches to adaptable homes, flexible rooms, modular design and other ideas that could influence how our living spaces develop. Some may eventually become ordinary parts of everyday homes. Others may never make it beyond an interesting experiment. That's part of what makes them worth exploring. Space Lab isn't about predicting exactly what the home of the future will look like. It's about following the ideas that might help shape it.

Start with the space you've got

There will always be homes bigger than ours. There will always be another room we'd quite like to have. But getting more from your home doesn't have to begin with adding square metres. It can start with a shelf, a different layout, a piece of furniture that earns the space it occupies or simply looking at a familiar room from another angle. That's also why we're building tools such as the Spacelo Room Layout Planner — to help turn some of those ideas into something you can experiment with in your own space. Over time, Space Lab will bring together practical solutions you can use now with interesting ideas about where our homes might be heading next. Because the question isn't always: How can I get more space? Sometimes it's: How can I get more from the space I already have?

Keep it for later
