Homes don't fit neatly into categories
Most of us don't experience our homes one subject at a time.
You might be trying to find somewhere better to work, wondering why a plant isn't doing particularly well, looking for ways to reduce energy use and deciding whether that empty corner could actually be useful — all in the same week.
Yet the information we find online is often separated into completely different worlds.
Gardening over here. Interiors somewhere else. Smart-home technology in another place entirely.
Spacelo exists because we think there's value in bringing some of those ideas together.
Start with the space you already have
It's easy to look at impressive homes, gardens and interiors online and come away with a long list of things you'd need to change, replace or buy.
We're more interested in starting with what you already have.
Sometimes making a home work better means a big project. But quite often it's something much smaller: reorganising an awkward room, growing herbs on a windowsill, finding a plant better suited to the available light or automating a repetitive task.
And while we're interested in clever ways to make limited space work harder, the same idea applies to larger homes too. Having more room doesn't automatically mean you're making the best use of it.
The question isn't necessarily “How do I get more space?”
Sometimes it's simply “What could I do differently with the space I've got?”
Ideas that work in real life
There are plenty of beautiful homes, clever products and impressive pieces of technology out there — and we'll happily explore them.
But something being new, expensive or clever doesn't automatically mean it's the right solution.
What matters is how well an idea works in everyday life. A complicated smart-home setup that saves you almost no time isn't necessarily better than a simple switch. A beautiful storage system isn't particularly helpful if it's awkward to use every day. And buying the plant everyone seems to have isn't much fun if your home doesn't provide the conditions it needs.
That's something we want to keep coming back to on Spacelo: does this actually make living here better?
Sometimes the answer will be yes. Sometimes there might be a simpler option.
Three different ideas with a lot in common
That's where GrowHaus, Space Lab and Smart Living come together.
Growing something at home is partly about understanding the environment around you. Making better use of a room means understanding how you actually use it. Smart technology is most useful when it solves a genuine everyday problem.
They're different subjects, but the thinking behind them is surprisingly similar.
Understand what you have. Work out what you need. Then find something that genuinely helps.
That's the idea behind Spacelo.
There's always more to explore
There won't be one answer for every home or every problem, and that's part of what makes these subjects interesting.
Some Spacelo articles will focus on practical solutions to specific problems. Others will explore new ideas, products or different ways of doing things. The tools take that a step further by helping you apply some of those ideas to your own home.
And there will always be more to explore. New technology appears, the way we use our homes changes, and sometimes a familiar problem just needs looking at from a different angle.
That's part of why Inside Spacelo exists too. It's somewhere we can share more about the thinking behind the site, introduce new things we're working on and talk about where Spacelo is heading.
For now, the aim is fairly simple:
Explore interesting ideas. Build useful things. And help people get a little more from the homes they already have.
